This is a simply fantastic program on non-cognitive skills (aka social and emotional learning) and how they are really the foundation upon which cognitive skills are built.
Back to School: This American Life
It is compelling evidence why using standardized tests to measure teacher/school performance is short sighted. If there are social and emotional issues that prevent some kids from being able to engage and learn the lesson, then of course those kids will test poorly. We must confront and address root causes, rather than pretending they don't exist.
